Dr. Kramer and Tova

Who We Are:

We are Dr. Sybil Kramer and daughter Tova Kramer Searleman.

Dr. Kramer is a board-certified endocrinologist who has been practicing medicine since 1980.  She has been helping thousands of people with diabetes by providing sound medical advice for patients for over thirty years.  Many Primary Care physicians consult with her for help with their most difficult endocrinology and diabetes cases.

Tova is a therapist who works with young children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders.  She has a passion for cooking healthy, delicious foods for people living with diabetes, and also has a weakness for dramatic flair!

What We Do:

Some of Dr. Kramer’s patients have had difficulty following the diet because they don’t know how to read food labels, find the appropriate foods in the supermarket and cook meals that taste good and are appropriate for them.  Patients will have an opportunity to watch and learn how I and my daughter shop, cook and read labels and prepare tasty diabetic friendly meals.  After watching Tova cook the meals in our family kitchen, you will be able to print out our recipes and duplicate them.

Why We Do It:

Dr. Kramer realized that people with diabetes need more than just office visits with their doctors and nurse educators to obtain good control of their diabetes.  In addition to learning about insulin,  medication, diet, and exercise, they need to be able to implement this knowledge.  While some of her patients have been able to go home and follow her recommendations, she sees that many have been unable to make any lifestyle changes without extra support.  A number of patients end their office appointments determined to follow her advice,  but have been subsequently unable to follow through with their diet and exercise plans despite understanding the consequences.  Many of her patients say, “I wish I could take you home!”   Now, this resource provides anyone with diabetes an opportunity to access practical information from their homes.

Tova loves to teach people how to cook-especially those who are “afraid” of the kitchen.  In this website, you will find a number of videos wherein Tova demonstrates, step-by-step, how to cook delicious recipes that are appropriate for a person with diabetes.  Her cooking skills combined with Dr. Kramer’s medical expertise and 30+ years of experience yield a solid online resource that will help a person with diabetes to easily prepare foods that are both healthy and delectable.

The FDA is in the process of examining the data to see if Actos is connected to an increase in the incidence of bladder cancer. If it finds the risks of the cancer is greater than the benefits of the medication, it can decide to pull it from the market or require a black box warning. Unfortunately, most medication will have side affects. A health care professional needs to balance the risk of using a medication against its potential benefit before prescribing anything. If the risks outweigh the benefits, the drug should not be used. If there is a alternative with lower risk/benefit ratio, that would be preferable. Diabetes is a terrible disease with a multitude of complications. The best tool is diet and exercise. If the sugars are still high the risk of using it must be balanced against its benefits. If you need a medication, discuss the risk and benefits of using it with your health professional to make an informed decision. thanks, Sybil
