If you knew you were at high risk of developing Diabetes type 2, would you change your diet, exercise, and do anything you could to lower that risk? A study at MGH shows how motivation is lagging behind technology. People who were overweight had detailed genetic testing and informed of the results. Those with a 17% chance of developing frank Diabetes type 2 over the next 3 years did not lose any more weight than those in the lower risk group which had a 9% risk. Medical professionals who spend so much of their time counseling patients about their risk of developing any chronic disease are quite disappointed but not surprised at the results. We need to improve our methods for motivating people to achieve their own optimal results.
