Type 2 Diabetes is causes by resistance to insulin which means it takes more insulin to keep blood sugar at appropriate levels. Weight loss through diet and aerobic exercise have been advised to lower insulin resistance and thus improve blood sugar. A recent study showed weight lifting may have similar benefits. It seems reasonable to expect an increase in muscle mass to lower insulin resistance. While weight lifting is good, combining it with aerobic exercise such as walking, or bike riding will provide even more benefit. Please consult your health care provider before starting an exercise regimen.
